Best Horde Mage Race - A Breakdown by Purpose

There are a number of races Horde side that can be mages...but which ones are the best? Determining the best Horde mage race can be difficult without experience or a lot of research, but this guide is here to help. We'll discuss the advantages of each race in PvP and PvE, and try to determine the best for both purposes.

First, lets discuss PvP. Undead maintain their typical PvP dominance, despite their nerf in patch 3.2; even with the new 45 second cooldown, WotF is a great racial ability, as being able to break CCs is vital for a fragile caster classes such as mage. Second place however goes the opposite direction, relying on brute strength: Troll's Berserking is amazing burst damage, especially used with other burst abilities. Third place is a bit harder to pin down; Orcs have superior damage, thanks to Blood Fury and (for Frost) their pet damage buff, but Blood Elves have superior control thanks to their AoE silence. Orcs are superior, though, because of the weakness of the Blood Elf trait: It needs you to be close to the enemy, which is pretty much the exact opposite of what any mage wants to be doing.

So let's talk about PvE now. For DPS, the best Horde mage race is a close call between Troll and Orc. Troll's Berserking is simply amazing at pumping your damage, defintely beating Orc's Blood Fury. But between Blood Fury and the pet damage buff, Orc frost mages will do slightly more damage than their counterparts. Since Frost is weak DPS, though, Trolls wins first place. The only other worthwhile option is Blood Elves with their ability to regenerate some mana on command...but this is a pretty worthless ability all in all.
